In folk tales I grew up with, characters would turn into stone out of extremes of emotion, thereby scoring monuments to their grief, love, or anguish into the landscape for generations. Their stories speak to affects so powerful they transcend the individual and become part of the world of others. With this project, I want to explore the rock as a body implicated in space and its possibilities, what could have been and still be.

I wrap rocks in parallel strips of paper, each a different color on either side and twisted into a Möbius strip. Fusing two opposite sides of paper into one, the Möbius strip disrupts the distinction between inside and outside, enveloping the rock in a wavering dimension, an interior that has no depth and remains open. There is no right side, no side that resists penetration. Bound in paper, each rock loses some of its rigidity and gains color and fragility, becomes taut or buoyant, drapes and slumps out, thereby extending into space in new ways.

‍warm scaffold are my monuments to small transformations that can render the self beyond fixed boundaries to be continuous with the world it lives in.
